History

Rao Bahadur Sri. A. Veeriya Vandayar, after visiting European countries, had a vision to develop education in his rural area. With his brother Sri. A. Krishnasamy Vandayar he started Sri Pushpam College in 1956 with 106 students and 10 teachers. It was renamed in 1972 as A. Veeriya Vandayar Memorial Sri Pushpam College in fond and fitting memory of its founder/president.

Location

The college is in Poondi, 12 km from Thanjavur on the way to Nagapattinam in Tamilnadu state in India on the National Highway 74. The college is well linked by buses and trains from Thanjavur. It is in a sprawling sylvan surroundings of 82 acres (330,000 m²).

Accreditation

The college has been accredited with 4 star status by the N.A.A.C. It has been re-accredited with Grade 'A' status by the N.A.A.C. It became autonomous 21 years ago.

The school has a large boys hostel with spacious and hygienic rooms; it has a kitchen with steam cooking ranges and comfortable dining halls. There is a separate hostel for girls on campus.

Library

The library housed in a separate building (1971), foundation stone laid by former chief minister Kamaraj, is now having 77342 books, 231 journals. This treasure is collection of rare books of old classics English literature of 17th century to the modern days depicting the religious of the region. The library will be completely computerized and will go for electronic media soon.

The library is well-equipped with a fine collection of more than 87,000 books in all branches. There are separate departmental libraries with book banks, text books and back volumes as well as current volumes of journals.
